Chapter Six

“That’s four in one day,” Tyler shook his head. He turned on the cruise control. “And we’ve lost Joel for good this time.”

“Maybe it was for the best,” Eric said as he recovered. He looked around and found Elise sleeping in Sandra’s arms. “Maybe not.”

“We can take care of Elise,” Tyler said.

“That’s not the problem,” Eric shook his head. “Olivia’s dying wish was for Joel to take care of her child.”

“And?” Tyler chuckled and shook his head. “Joel’s a monster.”

“But he was right.”

The truck went quiet.

“I did kill Olivia,” Eric said, putting a hand on his face.

Tyler looked in the mirror at Eric but didn’t say anything.

They all knew it was true.

“You can’t really pin yourself as the murderer,” the woman with a fear of blood said. “This is a messed up world. Those raiders are the killers.”

“But I could’ve gotten us out of there, then no one would be gone,” Eric said.

“Who pulled the trigger?” the woman asked.

“One of those soldiers,” Eric said. “But…”

“No ‘but’s,” the woman said. “You didn’t pull the trigger, so you didn’t kill her.”

“That’s not how Joel saw it.”

“Well that’s how I see it,” the woman said.

The truck went silent again.

“Where are we headed anyway?” Laura asked.

“Camp Three,” Tyler said.

“Camp Three doesn’t exist,” Eric said. “The military told us.”

“Ivan told me otherwise,” Tyler said. “Camp Three is a military outlet only forty miles from here. They can help us.”

“Ivan is still alive?” Eric asked.

“Should be,” Tyler nodded. “I’d be damned if he isn’t. He’s a walking Russian tank.”

“I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

=====

The military outlet was basically in the middle of nowhere. It was surrounded by electric fencing, and looked like a prison. There were watchtowers at every corner of the fence, all surrounding one large construct in the middle. Tyler was closing in on the outlet.

“I can’t stop thinking,” Eric sighed.

“About?” Sandra asked as she comforted Elise.

“We basically just stole a child and killed the parents, not only that but murdered our friends,” Eric said. “I know what you’re gonna say. ‘Eric stop thinking like that, you did nothing wrong’. Well that’s horse s***. We literally just abandoned Joel, killed his love, and stole his child. How messed up can one group of people get?”

Tyler sighed.

“What are we gonna tell Ivan?” Eric asked.

“If he asks, we’ll tell him Joel went ballistic and dangerous,” Tyler said.

Eric sighed as well. Then something hit him. “Wait a minute.”

Tyler looked at him, as did others.

“Olivia said she was ‘turning’, right?” Eric asked.

The others looked at each other and nodded.

“But she got an immunization?” Eric asked.

Tyler’s eyes widened. “Well that’s a mystery. It was probably something about dosage. She did say the cure wasn’t working on her.”

“That means… We aren’t immune?” Eveline asked.

“She was dying, though,” Stella said. “That might have been herself thinking she was turning.”

“We should still be cautious,” Tyler said.

Once Tyler accessed the main gates, a military unit approached the vehicle. “Wow, this isn’t surprising,” the unit shook her head. “I’m assuming Sergeant Skoltzen sent you?”

“Yes,” Tyler nodded.
